Hard At Work Episode IV: A New Hope

Hello everyone, it's time for another update post!

This time I'll cover the results of the last development poll.

The poll this time had a response rate on the low side, particularly when compared to the previous poll. I feel like I probably didn't make it obvious enough on the Patreon post, something I'll have to keep in mind in the future. Anyhow, let's go ahead and get down to it!

Of course, it seems like over one-third of the respondents rarely report bugs, if they do at all. Bug reports are pretty important, and nothing makes me want to scream like seeing someone write something like "the same bug has been in there for 3 versions now!". We fix 99.7% of reported bugs with each new release, so if someone has seen a bug multiple months, it means nobody has reported it and we don't know about it.
As we'll see later, people find it difficult to locate new content in the game. I think part of this is that we use the change logs to list all the new content we add to the game. So, if you don't read the changelog, finding most of the new content is going to take a good deal of searching and experimentation. I'm still trying to figure out a better way of handling this, but for now, the changelog is still important.
I think all the drugs for AW are pretty interesting. A lot of people are apparently going to be going the D.A.R.E. route, which basically means "take all the drugs in sight!" :D
I basically put all my favorite shows on here as options, so things turned out pretty much as expected. The Great Rape Escape took the lead, as it's featured with some actual writing in the female start. I think Creamy PI and Gina Warrior Slut Princess will both get some support when I have time to write an episode for them :D

Now for the more "serious" questions:

Well, I'm glad that people don't seem to find it too hard to learn. We definitely need to improve the tutorial images as well as finish creating some of the tutorial and guide content. More information about metal stats, and finding things to do in Appletree, will both probably make things easier.

This is the question I mentioned earlier... how easy is it to find new content. It seems like the changelog isn't commonly read, so I think many people have a hard time finding things without it. I've also noticed that the changelog itself tends to talk about new content in the context of existing content. So using our cave question above as an example, telling people that you can find a cave in the Hoden Springs area doesn't mean much if you have no idea what the Hoden Springs are.

The pie chart is another look at the data above. I think it makes it more clear. While 13% of people dislike the SVG portraits, 43% like them, and the most common opinion is neutral.

We got a spread of answers on this one. It seems like the predominant view is that they like the SVG face portraits, though there are also those that dislike them. I think the solution for those that dislike them is to allow the portraits to be disabled. There are a lot of advantages to using SVGs, as mentioned in the SVG blog post a while back, so for now, I think we'll continue with them. We can always re-evaluate later on, particularly if we get access to some improved art assets.

People do tend to view art assets, particularly portraits, as being important. I think having a PC portrait that is SVG-based, with a lot more customization available will be popular. :D

Aside from the development poll, we've been hard at work on version 0.22. I'm wrapping up the male prologue, and Besty has been working on a few minor items that have needed attention, such as handling fluids. :D

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Dying In Your Arms

Hello everyone, it's been a while since my last real post. Mostly, this has been because of an awful cold/flu that I caught over a week ago, the worst I've had in many years. I still have sinus congestion and a wet cough. I wrote a very brief blog entry about being sick several days ago, but I'm afraid of actually reading what I wrote...

Before I continue, let me go ahead and share the link to the 4-20 AW Development Poll. Fill it out and let us know what you think!

Anyway... I spent the last week or so clinging to unlife, and because of a lack of suitable personnel where I work, I was only able to call in sick one day. So I did try to do some AW-related things where I could, but I was pretty out of it. I actually tore something in my throat from coughing so much, which gave me the cool and scary ability to cough blood.

Presently my voice sounds very strange, as if only part of my vocal cords are working (because only some of my vocal cords are working). If I try to sing a scale such as do re mi... sound only comes out about a third of the time. It's a pretty fun little effect, though I do hope it goes away soon.

I'll be returning to my normal posting schedule, and should be able to reply to comments on various platforms such as Patreon more regularly now that I'm starting to feel better. :D

Updates!

My main mission this month has been writing, specifically wrapping up the prologues. I'm unfortunately quite behind after losing all that time to pestilence, but there will still be a lot more stuff to see in version 0.22 in the prologues. I've also added a background music soundtrack to the game, which of course you will be able to disable or replace with your own music should you so wish.

Besty the CodeKitteh has been busy breaking AW in new and exciting ways, primarily dealing with the addition of drugs to the game. This includes consumable inventory items, drug effects, drug dealers, and withdrawal effects, along with a few other neat things like making sure you can clean semen and other fluids off your clothes properly.

I'll leave you all with a few preview images, I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Pestilience

Hello everyone,

It has been too long since my last update, especially since Besty is too shy to do an update of his own to the dev blog.

I've spent the last several days in bed, sick with the worst cold I've had in years. I'll save you the gory details, it's enough to say that there was a point where blood started getting involved and everything got messier from there.

Judging by how long it has taken to write these last few sentences, it'll be a little while yet before I'm back to work at full speed.

Before this pestilence began I was mostly working toward finishing the prologues. Besty is nearly done implementing drugs into AW.

The Hanging Out Release - v0.21.0 Change log

Hello everyone, and welcome to version 0.21.0, the Hanging Out Release!

This release marks a pretty important milestone in the development of AW; the transition from adding framework systems to primarily adding content. I personally am really excited about the transition, as it has been tough at times to 'stay the course' and work on coding instead of more fun things. :D I think that the effort is worth it, however, seeing just how easy it is to add all sorts of things to the game now. (And not just add things, but add things that mesh with all the game's systems.) I owe you all a big thanks for helping us reach this point!

So what is this release about?

This release was mostly about finishing the main game framework elements that were missing (events and hangouts), and expanding on the date system template. In addition to that, there were more system integrations like relationships, and of course, bug fixes.

As far as playable content goes, there is now more to do--and say--in dates with NPCs. You can also advance your relationship with NPCs, moving from casual dating to officially going out, becoming lovers, and even getting engaged. Be warned that relationships don't go from zero-to-married in a matter of weeks! You can also cultivate friendships with NPCs, using the new friend hangout system. There are several new activities you can participate in for both dates and hangouts.

The global event system has also been built, with two new events. The primary one involves going around with an exposed undercarriage. Cops can now catch you, based partially on your exhibitionism score. There are more entries on the APD in the game encyclopedia and a fun scene where you can try and use your body to escape paying fines when they catch you. If you get caught too many times, you may get sent off to prison... there's a new bad end as a prison pacifier...

The other event involves a free candy van and a sociopath known only as the sock collector. Playing as an underage character with 'young' physical traits, or simply having a character named Loli, will make it possible to encounter this event during the right time of day in the residential area...

There are plenty of other new content things for you to discover, including a new job event by Asuka, new actions in the residential area, new places in Muschi Valley to explore, and for the brave-of-heart: the Hoden Cavern Adventure which takes place near the Hoden Springs. Check out the detailed changelog below for details!

Work Hours

As usual, we've put in a lot of hours over the last four weeks. You can download the reports here. I forgot to log a few things, but I don't think it'll affect the total more than a dozen hours or so.

As we move into the more creative phase of development, I'm going to be reducing my AW work hours a bit. Partly this is because it's difficult to simply "power through" creative work without sacrificing quality and partly because of the ongoing issues with my health. It's not anything critical at this point, but I've been having ongoing issues with my heart since September. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly what is wrong, but I do know that my lifestyle hasn't been very healthy for quite some time now. I need to start dedicating time to getting exercise and other activities that'll promote a healthy Thaum.

      • This is far from sufficient to prevent a crafty wordsmith from having a naughty name.

The Seedbed Release - v1.31

Update: So all sorts of shit happened, mostly a killer migraine and then discovering this morning that someone using git as...
